Osteoporosis and Yoga

Exercise is an effective, inexpensive and healthy way to prevent and treat osteoporosis, and if its yoga then the benefits increase.
Can yoga for osteoporosis cure the disease? Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured. People practice yoga to lose weight and become flexible. Besides attaining a youthful physique and look, yoga cures the thinning bone density. With these yogic postures you can prevent and reverse osteoporosis.
Bone density comprises of calcium and magnesium. Loosing bone density is a part of the aging process, but when an increased amount is lost, it results in brittle bones that are prone to fracture. The most common place of damage is spine, hips, and wrist. Yoga for osteoporosis places stress on bones, which results in absorption of calcium and thus improve the bone mass. Yoga postures like cobra (Bhujangasana) and locust (Salabhasana) correct the excessive curvature of the upper spine. Virasana and Siddhasana are excellent forms for strengthening the hip joints. Prasarita Padottanasana and Tadasana are weight bearing poses for the legs, hips, arms and wrists that enable calcium absorption and promote flexibility are excellent yoga for osteoporosis exercises.
Since with incline in age, the body’s capacity to remain youthful declines, therefore beginning with easy yoga for shorter time duration initially is advised. When the body accommodates to this new form of exercise, increasing the intensity will build stronger bones. However, never push the body beyond its capacity to perform, as it will result in more damage than cure. Proper yogic postures will ensure better result. For healthy development of the bone mass, yogic postures must be consistently practiced for 30 minutes every day, round the year.
